Frequently Asked Questions
Can you print a model and send it to me?
I’m sorry no I can’t. There are two main reasons why I don’t.
a) The models are based on TV/Film props for which I don’t own any rights. Selling models, even for cost, is probably a bad idea.
b) The combined printing time for the Stargate Mk2 is 112 hours. That’s over four and a half days of continuous printing. Two weeks if you split it down into eight hour days. I simply don’t have the time for such an undertaking.
There are companies who will 3d print models and ship them to you.
Can I sell your 3d models on my store/website
As above, making money without the appropriate rights is probably a bad idea. The Creative Commons license on Thingiverse for some of the models does include commercial rights. Unfortunately that’s a mistake on my part as I thought I had selected a non-commercial license.
I’m not sure if the model will fit on my printer. Can you give me the dimensions?
Have you checked the model description or user comments to see if the dimensions are listed or quoted by someone? Whist I can reply to your request regarding a specific size. It’s probably quicker to download the model and preview it in your printing software to check for yourself.
A part doesn’t print properly. Can you help?
Check the user comments to see if anyone else has found a fix for your problem. Also try a different slicing program. Some programs are more resilient than others. If you are still having a problem then either post a comment on the relevant model page or use the contact page to send me a message. Whilst I can’t test the models with different 3d printers. I will see if I can identify an error and will update the model accordingly.
Can you send me the complete model file or export the model in a different format?
The models are released in the format I feel is most appropriate. If you want to modify the model, or make an accessory for the model. You can load up all the parts into your 3d design package of choice and customise the model the way you need. This is also a good way to learn how to use 3d software if you’re not already familiar with them.
Can I modify your model?
The Creative Commons license allows you to modify the model on the condition you make your modification available under the same license and credit me as the original designer. Also, you should upload your modified version to Thingiverse as a remix of the original.
Why are some parts of the model glued and others designed for screw fit?
I generally design screw fit parts if I expect to take the model apart. For instance, I might want to borrow the electronics to test in another model before I purchase the relevant kit. You can glue these parts if you don’t intend on dismantling the model.
What printer/glue/microprocessor do you use?
The model page should list any specific components required. Otherwise check out the equipment page for generic components or tools.
Your electronic circuit diagrams are wrong or incomplete.
The circuit diagrams are only provided for reference. They may not be the most efficient design, but they do work as you can see in the model videos. If you have a specific problem then either post a comment on the model page or use the contact page to send me a message.
I’ve seen your models listed on another website with someone else as the designer.
The creative commons license under which the models are released allows people to modify the models and make their versions available under the same license. However I should be credited as the original designer. If you believe this is not the case, then either politely ask the designer to correct the model listing, or use the contact page to send me a message.
My question is not listed?
Please either comment on the relevant model on Thingiverse or use the contact page to send me a message.
